Where: Calais, France

The Facts

A boat headed for the UK has capsized in the Channel near Calais, drowning at least thirty-one people.

The UN’s International Organization for Migration confirmed that the shipwreck, which has led to the deaths of at least 31 people, is the largest loss of life in the Channel since data collection started in 2014.

UK Home Secretary Priti Patel stated, “It serves as the starkest possible reminder of the dangers of these Channel crossings organized by ruthless criminal gangs.”

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron on the evening of November 24th – They agreed to increase efforts to prevent such deadly crossings and stop the gangs responsible for risking people’s lives.

France’s Minister of Interior, Gerald Darmanin, also blamed the smugglers who endanger the lives of men, women, and children without any scruples.
