The Facts

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced Russia’s plans to end diplomatic engagement with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Lavrov’s announcement comes days after NATO expelled eight diplomats from Russia’s mission for alleged espionage.

Russia will close the NATO office in Moscow on November 1st, stripping its staff of their accreditation. NATO’s information office will be closed too.

Informing of Russia’s intentions to suspend operations of its official mission to NATO in Brussels, Lavrov said, “Following certain measures taken by NATO, the basic conditions for common work no longer exist.”

NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said, “Nato’s policy towards Russia remains consistent. We have strengthened our deterrence and defense in response to Russia’s aggressive actions, while at the same time we remain open to dialogue, including through the Nato-Russia council.”
