President Macron was greeting bystanders when he was slapped

French President Macron was slapped in the face. The bystander who slapped him is detained.

The Facts

▪ President Macron visited a training institution for the hospitality industry when he put his hand out to greet a man in a small gathering of people behind a metal barrier.

▪ The man shouted “Down with Macron” and slapped the President on the left side of his face.

▪ Valence prosecutor Alex Perrin said the police detained the onlooker who slapped Macron and a man accompanying him.

▪ Far-right leader Marine Le Pen tweeted, “It is inadmissible to physically attack the President of the Republic. I am the 1st opponent of Emmanuel Macron, but he is the President: we can fight him politically, but we cannot afford the slightest violence towards him.” (translated)

▪ Former President Francois Hollande of the Socialist Party tweeted, “To attack the President of the Republic is to deal a severe and intolerable blow to our institutions. Faced with this unspeakable gesture, the whole Nation must show solidarity with the Head of State.” (translated)
