Department of Justice announces the recovery of ransom paid by Colonial Pipeline to DarkSide

Ransom paid to Colonial Pipeline hackers recovered. DOJ and FBI get back $2.3 million in Bitcoin.

The Facts

▪ CEO Joseph Blount told Wall Street Journal that Colonial Pipeline paid $4.4 million in ransom to the DarkSide cybercrime group on the 7th of May to restore service.

▪ Paul Abbate, Deputy Director of the FBI, confirmed that the US had seized 63.7 Bitcoins, amounting to roughly $2.3 million.

▪ Abbate stated, “Since last year, we’ve been pursuing an investigation into DarkSide, a Russia-based cybercrime group.”

▪ The recovery effort, which included the Department of Justice, the FBI, and Colonial Pipeline, began shortly after the ransom was delivered.

▪ A press release stated the recovery effort was coordinated by the DoJ’s recently launched Ransomware and Digital Extortion Task Force.
